Added sugars: Foods and beverages high in added sugars, such as sugary drinks, candies, pastries, and sweetened snacks, should be limited. Excessive sugar intake can contribute to weight gain, inflammation, and an increased risk of chronic conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Sodium-rich foods: Limiting sodium intake is particularly important for older adults as it can contribute to high blood pressure and increase the risk of cardiovascular issues. Minimize the consumption of processed and packaged foods, fast food, and restaurant meals, as they often contain high amounts of sodium. Instead, choose fresh, whole foods prepared at home, using herbs and spices to season dishes.
Saturated and trans fats: Foods high in saturated and trans fats can raise cholesterol levels and increase the risk of heart disease. Limit the consumption of fatty meats, full-fat dairy products, fried foods, and commercially baked goods. Instead, choose lean protein sources, such as skinless poultry, fish, legumes, and opt for healthier fat sources like avocados, nuts, and seeds.
Highly processed and refined grains: Refined grains, such as white bread, white rice, and refined pasta, have been stripped of beneficial fiber and nutrients. These foods can cause spikes in blood sugar levels and lack the nutrients found in whole grains. Choose whole grain alternatives like whole wheat bread, brown rice, quinoa, and oats, which provide more fiber and essential nutrients.
Alcohol in excess: Excessive alcohol consumption can adversely affect health, including an increased risk of liver disease, cardiovascular issues, and certain cancers. It’s generally recommended to consume alcohol in moderation, which means up to one drink per day for women and up to two drinks per day for men.
High-fat and fried foods: High-fat foods and those fried can be hard to digest and may contribute to digestive issues, weight gain, and inflammation. Limit consumption of greasy fried foods, high-fat dairy products, and fatty cuts of meat.
Empty calorie foods: Minimize consumption of foods with low nutritional value, such as sugary drinks, processed snacks, and sweets. These foods can lead to weight gain and nutrient deficiencies without providing significant health benefits.
